Birkenstock’s Arizona sandals are the world’s most popular shoe, according to the global fashion search platform, Lyst. “Retailing at $99.95, searches for the sandals spiked 225 percent over the quarter, and they sold out across many retailers,” the data states.

Lyst ranked fashion’s buzziest brands and products that made waves in Q2 of 2020 by analyzing the shopping behavior of more than 9 million shoppers a month. Lyst dove into the searching, browsing and purchase patterns of users across 12,000 designers and online stores, also using Google and social media search data to inform findings.

The findings suggest that the reason for the revival of the Birkenstock may be a combination of the rise of gender-bending fashion trends mixed with the need for comfortable slip-on shoes during quarantine.

“Over the past few years, numerous collaborations with labels such as Valentino, Rick Owens and Proenza Schouler have helped the sandal develop a famous following, with powerful celebrity influencers such as Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Leonardo DiCaprio and Usher among its fans,” the report states.

Known for its cork and rubber soles, which contours to the shape of your feet, Birkenstocks has launched many different styles since the wildly popular shoe brand was founded in 1774. The double-banded sandals first rose to mainstream modern-day popularity in the early 1990s and then made a major comeback in the early 2010s.
